Preparing your body and strengthening your core abdominal muscles before and after ostomy surgery is a great way to help reduce the chances of developing a parastomal hernia.
The exercises in this video are designed to help build abdominal strength and can be performed easily at home, at your own pace. Each exercise has been carefully selected by Jay Hyrons, a Clinical Fitness Trainer who lives with a colostomy.
If you have back problems, osteoporosis or any other health concerns, talk to your doctor before doing these core-strength exercises. Also, please make sure you speak with your Stoma Care Nurse before attempting any exercise following ostomy surgery.
Since parastomal hernias form in all different sizes and shapes, sometimes it can be difficult to get a proper seal between your skin and the ostomy flange. Here are two products from CliniMed that can help.
Aura® Profile has a flexible, adaptable flange that molds and shapes around the contours of a parastomal hernia providing a secure, leak-free fit. Available in closed, drainable and urostomy variations, the unique flange can be fully inverted to provide a solution for dips, moats, scars or creases. The inclusion of medical-grade Manuka honey to the hydrocolloid flange may help to promote healthy skin around the stoma.
Adhesion of the pouch was perfect. It was first class for anybody with a normal size parastomal hernia, particularly comfortable. By inverting the flange prior to affixing, it made the whole exercise easy. – Mr. C
Especially for ostomates who lead an active lifestyle, UltraFrame is a revolutionary new flange extender designed to keep the flange securely in place whilst the body keeps on moving. Unlike traditional hydrocolloid flange extenders, UltraFrame is made from an ultra-thin, transparent and waterproof film, making it ideal for bathing, swimming, and high-intensity sports or activities.
The UltraFrame flange extenders are delightful to apply and remove and contour round my hernia. I am an active ostomate and found the extenders hold up under pressure. – Mike Evans
