On April 14, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan (R) signed SB 241into law which mandates that health insurers must provide coverage for ostomy supplies.
The CDC’s anti-smoking ad campaign was released in April which portrayed ostomies in a negative light. However, ostomates took a stand to educate the general public.
In September, the United Ostomy Associations of America celebrated its 10th anniversary at the biennial conference in St. Louis, Missouri where hundreds gathered to educate, celebrate and appreciate ostomates.
October 3rd was the 8th World Ostomy Day, sponsored by the International Ostomy Association. The universal motto, “Many Stories, One Voice,” was broadcast around the globe.
The second annual WannaWearOne 5k run/walk events took place this year on World Ostomy Day in Durham, North Carolina, and Happy Valley, Oregon.
In other news, two ostomates have taken to film to share their experiences with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and ostomy surgery. The documentaries were released this year, “Semicolon; The Adventures of Ostomy Girl” and “Inside/Out My Battle with IBD.”
