National Ostomy Awareness Day began in 2010 and is held annually on the first Saturday of October. This is a day to bring together the entire ostomy community. The United Ostomy Associations of America (UOAA) continues to celebrate this day by spreading awareness and increasing national visibility of those living with ostomies. We will carry on breaking the silence and shining a positive light on what has saved so many lives.
We’re excited to announce this year’s theme is Resilience: “Bouncing Back into Life” which is all about finding your inner strength to bounce back from this surgery and rise up stronger than ever before. Resilience is a quality that is shared by all those living with an ostomy.
Five ways you can help spread the word:
1 - Get your town to pass a Proclamation declaring October 1, 2016 as Ostomy Awareness Day (and let us know if you are successful!)
2 - Submit a Letter to the Editor to your local newspaper
3 - Share a photo (selfie) on your favorite social media account with hashtags #IAmResilient & #OstomyDay on October 1st
4 - Tell your ostomy story on your local radio station
5 - Post on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. (OAD profile and cover photos available)
Here are some of the ways you can celebrate Ostomy Awareness Day:
- Take an #IAmResilient “selfie” or photo (make your own sign or use this one). How are you ‘bouncing back into life’? What motivates you to be resilient? Take a picture with the sign showing us how you are resilient. Then use the hashtag #IAmResilient and share by tagging UOAA’s FB (@UOAAinc), Twitter (@UOAA) or Instagram (@UOAA_). Contest details will be announced on IG and FB.
- Join a live race or the virtual Run For Resilience Ostomy 5k!
- Take part in a Twitter Chat by following #OADchat at Noon (EST) Saturday, October 1st and talk resilience and all things ostomy with medical professionals and other ostomates.
- Show your support with official Ostomy Awareness Day products! Purchase a $5 Ostomy Awareness Day T-shirt from ConvaTec (100% of proceeds benefit UOAA - more sizes available by September 23rd)
