February 4th is World Cancer Day, a day in which we collectively come together to bring awareness and show support for all cancers. It’s hard to find a person in society today that hasn’t been touched by cancer directly or indirectly. According to the CDC, cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, exceeded only by heart disease.

World Cancer Day hopes to honor those who are fighting and those who have been lost to this dreadful disease. In honor of this significant day, we would like to acknowledge a few incredible groups who are working hard to support cancer patients and advocate for awareness, research and education.

Artist Matthew Mewhorter makes cartoons about life with cancer, drawing himself as an owl, and tells the stories of other patients and survivors through comics on Cancer Owl. In 2014, he was diagnosed with stage 2 colorectal cancer and had a temporary ostomy for one year as part of his treatment. Matt says, "with the combination of a positive spirit, the support of my family, and an amazing medical team – I am cancer free today."

By making the words colon, colorectal and colonoscopy part of everyday language, the Colon Cancer Coalition hopes to overcome the fear and decrease deaths from colorectal cancer. For over 12 years, ‘Get Your Rear in Gear’ has been an annual fundraising event.

Fight Colorectal Cancer is the leading patient advocacy group in colorectal cancer. Since 2011, they have worked to empower and activate a community of patients, fighters and champions to push for better policies and to support research, education and awareness for all those touched by colorectal cancer.
