The Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses (WOCN®) Society has been working with the Metro Maryland Ostomy Association (MMOA) since March 2014 to have legislation introduced in the Maryland General Assembly that would require insurance companies and HMO's in Maryland to provide coverage for ostomy equipment on ALL policies.
On April 14, 2015, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan (R) signed SB 241 into law which mandates that health insurers must provide coverage for ostomy supplies. Specifically, the bill requires an insurer, nonprofit health service plan, or health maintenance organization (collectively known as carriers) that provides hospital, medical, or surgical benefits to provide coverage for all medically appropriate and necessary equipment and supplies for the treatment of ostomies. The bill excludes those plans that offered through the state exchange. Maryland is the latest state to pass legislation mandating coverage of ostomy supplies joining Connecticut and New York.
WOCN Past President, Jan Colwell, testified before the Maryland State Legislature in support of this legislation and WOCN members have been active in helping to push for its passage. A copy of the legislation and the WOCN Society's testimony can be found here.
The WOCN® Society is a professional nursing society, which supports its members by promoting educational, clinical and research opportunities to advance the practice and guide the delivery of expert health care to individuals with wounds, ostomies, and incontinence.
